An Overview of Custom Orthotic Insoles for Flat Feet
Causes, benefits, and the treatment process for flat feet using custom orthotic insoles — plus notes on cost and when this approach is truly appropriate.
Flat feet is a condition in which the arch of the foot has collapsed or failed to develop properly, causing nearly the entire sole to make contact with the ground while standing. The causes can be genetic — since the structure of the foot's bones, muscles, and ligaments is partly determined by parental genes; traumatic — particularly injury to the posterior tibial tendon, a key structure supporting the arch; or lifestyle-related, arising from a sedentary routine, ill-fitting footwear, or prolonged poor standing and walking posture that gradually flattens the arch.
A flat-foot orthotic insole is a custom medical accessory placed inside footwear to support the arch and distribute pressure more evenly while standing, walking, or running. Based on the clinic's clinical experience, orthotic insoles offer several benefits: relieving pain and discomfort in the foot, ankle, knee, or lower back by reducing strain on the posterior tibial tendon and surrounding muscles; improving posture and gait by realigning the foot, which lowers long-term risk to the knees, hips, and spine; and helping prevent or slow related complications such as plantar fasciitis, heel pain, or ankle joint degeneration. It's worth noting that in young children with asymptomatic, physiologically flexible flat feet, an insole's role is mainly supportive and preventive rather than structurally 'correcting' the arch — the appropriate approach should always be based on an actual examination and the child's specific symptoms.
As for cost, ready-made insoles typically range from about 200,000–500,000 VND per pair depending on brand and material, while custom medical insoles — measured and designed for an individual's foot — run roughly 500,000 to 5,000,000 VND, depending on the measurement technology used and the provider. The exact price also depends on the material (such as EVA, gel, or premium imported materials), the patient's age, and the severity of the flat-foot condition.
At Lê Hoàn Orthotic Devices, the flat-foot treatment process using custom insoles typically involves: an examination and assessment of flat-foot severity using a scanner or X-ray; taking a foot mold with specialized equipment or by hand; designing and manufacturing a personalized insole from suitable material; guidance on use and an adaptation period; supplementary foot-strengthening exercises; and periodic follow-up roughly every six months to assess progress and adjust or replace the insole as needed.
