Scoliosis is a common medical condition that can cause serious complications if left untreated. Orthopedic bracing is a non-invasive solution that improves posture and slows curve progression.

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves abnormally to one side, forming a C or S shape when viewed from behind, and it can appear in children, adolescents, or adults. It falls into three main groups: congenital scoliosis, caused by a spinal defect present at birth; idiopathic scoliosis, most common in adolescents during puberty and accounting for roughly 85% of cases with no identifiable cause; and scoliosis caused by posture or underlying conditions such as osteoporosis, degeneration, or vertebral compression. Left undetected and untreated, scoliosis affects more than appearance - it can cause chronic back pain, breathing difficulty, or restricted movement.

An orthopedic brace is a medical device designed to support the spine, help maintain correct posture, and prevent the curve from progressing - especially important for children and adolescents whose spines are still growing. The brace works by applying appropriate mechanical pressure to the curved region of the spine without any surgical intervention, while supporting the chest, lower back, and pelvis to keep the spinal structure stable in its natural position.

The effectiveness of bracing for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is backed by a major clinical trial: the BrAIST (Bracing in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Trial), published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2013), followed 242 patients with Cobb angles of 20-45 degrees and found a success rate (no progression to 50 degrees or surgery) of 72% in the braced group versus only 48% in the observation-only group. Notably, effectiveness showed a clear dose-response relationship with daily wear time: patients wearing the brace more than 13 hours a day achieved a 90-93% success rate, while those wearing it less than 6 hours a day achieved only 42%.

For maximum effect, bracing must follow proper guidance: correct positioning (waist section sitting level across the back, avoiding slipping up or down), a snug fit that does not cause pain or pinching, and adherence to the prescribed wear time - typically a minimum of 8-12 hours a day, and in some cases up to 23 hours a day - combined with physical therapy exercises for spinal rehabilitation. Patients should not buy a brace on their own but should be examined by a physician for a proper treatment plan.
