Hip-Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis (HKAFO): Comprehensive Support for Spinal Cord Injury
The HKAFO hip-knee-ankle-foot orthosis, developed by Lê Hoàn Prosthetics & Orthotics, supports the hip, knee, ankle and foot together for people with spinal cord injury, with a redesigned build that is more comfortable and easier to use than traditional models.
The Hip-Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis (HKAFO), developed by Lê Hoàn Prosthetics & Orthotics, is a full lower-limb orthotic device designed specifically for people with spinal cord injury. Unlike braces that address a single joint, the HKAFO controls the hip, knee, ankle and foot together, providing a stable foundation that allows patients to stand and relearn to walk.
The newer-generation HKAFO is built specifically for patients with spinal cord injury at levels D8–D12, addressing the shortcomings of traditional HKAFO designs. Its structure is more reinforced, the wearer's center of gravity is lowered for greater stability, and the waist band that wraps around the lower back — which often causes discomfort and can interfere with digestive function in spinal cord injury patients — has been eliminated. The brace is also optimized for quick, comfortable donning and doffing during extended wear.
Based on Le Hoan Prosthetics and Orthotics' own internal observations of patients who have used both designs, the new HKAFO model is noticeably more comfortable and better accepted than the traditional design, and users report expending less energy when walking. This is the clinic's clinical observation, not the result of a published controlled study. In two monitored cases of complete D9-level spinal cord injury, users of the new brace were able to walk confidently and competently after about 5 days of practice at home.
Lê Hoàn's hip-knee-ankle-foot orthosis supports the entire joint chain from the hip down, making it well suited for cases that require simultaneous rehabilitation of the thigh, knee and foot. It is made from premium, durable materials resistant to temperature and humidity, and is custom designed and adjusted for each patient to ensure optimal fit and effectiveness.
