4+ Key Features of Functional Prosthetic Hands

A functional prosthetic hand is a medical device designed to replace or support the function of a hand that has been lost or impaired, helping the user carry out daily activities such as gripping, handling objects, or general movement. It typically integrates mechanical, electronic, or bionic mechanisms to mimic natural hand movement, with a level of dexterity and precision that depends on the technology used.

The first key feature is the ability to mimic natural movement: a functional hand can grip, grasp, open, rotate at the wrist, and even perform more complex actions such as typing or holding a pen, controlled via mechanical cables, myoelectric signals from the remaining muscles, or, in some advanced models, AI that learns the user's habits to optimize movement.

The second feature is customization to individual needs - the hand is designed according to the level of impairment, intended use (daily living, heavy-duty work, or sport), and each person's body characteristics, from size and weight to material (plastic, carbon fiber, silicone). The third feature is durability and environmental adaptability, typically built from resilient materials such as carbon fiber or lightweight metal, with some premium models meeting water- and dust-resistance (IP) standards.

A final feature worth noting is the maintenance and training required: functional prosthetic hands, especially myoelectric ones, need periodic maintenance (checking the battery, sensors, and motors) to keep functioning reliably, and users need guided training to become familiar with the controls - a process that can take a few weeks to a few months depending on the device's complexity.

At Le Hoan Prosthetics and Orthotics, a wide range of functional prosthetic hands is available to suit different users, backed by an efficient and safe assessment process to identify the most suitable option, reasonable pricing, and long-term warranty and customer support.
