Fitting an Ankle Disarticulation Prosthesis

An ankle disarticulation prosthesis is designed to replace the portion of the leg lost at the ankle joint, including the foot and part of the ankle. This is the lowest amputation level of the leg, typically indicated when the foot cannot be preserved due to injury, disease, or congenital defect, but the ankle joint and lower leg remain intact. Common reasons for needing this type of prosthesis include amputation from traffic or machinery accidents, diabetic foot ulceration or necrosis, uncontrolled severe infection, peripheral vascular disease causing ischemia, or congenital foot defects.

Because the ankle joint is preserved, wearers of an ankle disarticulation prosthesis typically benefit from more direct weight-bearing at the end of the residual limb, making walking and balance easier compared with some higher amputation levels. The prosthesis is designed with a high level of cosmetic realism, closely resembling a natural foot, which helps users feel more confident in daily activities and work.

The fitting process at the clinic typically involves: a health and residual-limb assessment by a physician and prosthetist; measuring and taking an impression of the residual limb; fabricating the socket to match its precise size and shape; test-fitting the prosthesis on the patient and adjusting for fit and comfort; detailed instruction on use; and finally, periodic follow-up checks based on each patient's actual needs. Thanks to this careful measuring and fitting process, the prosthesis typically fits snugly against the residual limb, providing a comfortable, secure feel from the very first uses.
